Student Spotlight: Jocelyn's Jiu-Jitsu Journey

I love being in Jiu Jitsu for so many reasons however there are three main reasons that have kept me loving it. Those three are my confidence, the environment, and how I feel safe. The gym helps me feel confident because by learning different skills and techniques, I feel as if I could do anything. Also, the way that Mr. Kenny, Mr. DJ, and all of the instructors teach the lessons and answer all of my questions whenever I am confused makes me feel confident in the skills that I am learning.

Another reason why I love Jiu Jitsu is the environment and community. All of the instructors are very nice and always make sure I understand what is being taught so that I can fully practice it to the best of my abilities. Even the other kids that attend Jiu Jitsu are very nice and thoughtful kids. Whenever somebody doesn’t understand, the others never laugh or be mean, instead they try to help. This makes me comfortable enough to share my questions and opinions with the class. Also, if a new student comes in, the experienced students volunteer to partner with them so that they feel comfortable. Everybody also knows how to behave at certain times during the class. For example, if the instructor is showing a technique, everyone is quiet and attentive.

Lastly, Jiu Jitsu has also taught me to feel safe in dangerous situations. Although I have never been in a situation where I had to use the techniques, knowing them helps me feel calm and safe in my day-to-day life. Also, not only does Jiu Jitsu teach me physical techniques to control a situation, but it also has taught me to be calm and not “lose my cool” if somebody is bullying me or teasing me. All together, Jiu Jitsu is an amazing activity and I have enjoyed it very much
